People's lifestyle before Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم )

  • It was an age of ignorance

    Civilization
They had dignified and lofty buildings, trade and political relations with great nations/countries, they had a high sense of grammar and language and literature and poetry.

    Lack of law and order
Their life was without law and order and any government or king. They were divided into tribes and the tribes were thirsty for blood of each other.
They fought wars for very small reasons for 50 and even 100 years.

    Religion
They were idol worshippers. They installed 360 idols in Kaaba (the first house for worship of One True God, constructed by Prophet Abraham and his son Prophet Ismail). Their worship style was clapping, whistling and dancing nude.

    Women's position
The women were degraded among them and led the most tragic life. The birth of a girl was a bad news for them and to rise them up was a disgrace for them. They were used to bury alive their infant daughters.

    Superstitious beliefs
They were engaged in illogical beliefs.
    ·         To ensure the rainfall people of some areas were used to tie a bundle of wood to the tell of cow. They took them to a mountain and burn the woods to burn the cow. They did so for the resemblance of fire and cry of cow due to pain with the lightning and thundering of rain. They thought it will cause rainfall.
    ·         They were used to take cow and ox together to make them drink water. If cow didn't drink water they assumed that the bad spirit is sitting between the horns of ox and it is not permitting the cow to drink, so they beat on the face of ox to drive away the bad spirit.
    ·         When a person of distinction died, they confined a camel near the grave and didn't giver it water and food to let it die, so that the dead person can ride the camel after death.
    ·         If a person was bitten by dog, they rubbed the blood of the chief of their tribe to cure him. If madness seems in that person due to dog bite, they took him to the desert and hung dirty bones in his neck to drive away the bad spirit.
    ·         They were used to make their children wear the teeth of a fox and cat to keep the harm of bad spirit away.
    ·         If child got pimples, her mother had to collect bread and dates from the houses of her tribe to give it to dogs to eat to cure her child.
    ·         While traveling they feared immorality of their wives so they were used to tie a thread to a tree. They believed that on their return from journey, if the thread is still there, their wives are innocent otherwise they assumed their wives have lost their immorality.
    ·         If the teeth of their children fell they caught them with two fingers and flung them towards the sun saying "O sun! Give him better teeth than these".
    ·         In case the children of a woman did not live (i.e. died during infancy) they believed that her children would live if she walked seven times over the slain body of a distinguished person.
